The NFL Combine is one of the most exciting events of the year, and after an electric Day 1, Day 2 did not disappoint.
Here are the biggest winners and losers after Friday’s on field workouts.
Winner: Kenyon Sadiq, TE, Oregon
Kenyon Sadiq made history. He ran a 4.39 40 yard dash, the fastest by a tight end at the combine since at least 2003. At 6 foot 3, 245 pounds, that is rare movement ability.
Testing
- 4.39 40
- 1.54 split
- 43.5 inch vertical
- 11 foot 1 inch broad jump
Next Gen Stats
- Athleticism: 94, best among tight ends
- Total score: 93, best among tight ends
He entered as a likely first rounder, and after Friday, that feels even more secure. There are still areas to clean up. He can drift on zone routes, lose focus on high throws, and needs more power at the point of attack as a blocker. But teams draft traits, and Sadiq has elite ones.
Round 1 looks real. Do not be surprised if a team like the Eagles targets the Oregon Duck.
Winner: Lorenzo Styles Jr., S, Ohio State
The Styles brothers are freaks of nature. Made in a lab.
Lorenzo ran a 4.27 40 yard dash, the fastest safety time at the combine since at least 2003 and the fastest time at the combine so far. He also posted a 39 inch vertical.
He was not considered an elite safety prospect entering the week. His college career was solid, not dominant. Remember, he started as a wide receiver at Notre Dame before converting to defensive back at Ohio State.
Even without a perfect profile, he has the kind of speed that moves you up boards. Expect his stock to rise. The Styles brothers are a problem.
Loser: Free Agent Safeties
The real losers were veteran safeties watching from home.
This safety class showed out. Four players ran sub 4.4 times, and multiple prospects looked clean in drills. Dillon Thieneman, AJ Haulcy, VJ Payne, and Robert Spears Jennings all put on a show.
Not to mention Caleb Downs did not even test, and he is already viewed as a top pick.
A wave of young, cheap, high upside options just flooded the safety market, and free agent safeties are going to feel it.
What to expect on Day 3
Saturday is the most hyped day of the combine with quarterbacks, wide receivers, and running backs on the field.
Players to watch
- QB: Ty Simpson, Drew Allar, Carson Beck
- RB: Jeremiyah Love
- WR: KC Concepcion, Makai Lemon, Carnell Tate
Time: 1 to 8 p.m. ET, Saturday
